The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that a rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election will take place in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11.
The development follows procedural irregularities identified in the December 2024 elections, particularly involving polling station results that were submitted without verification from presiding officers—despite being approved by agents of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The EC announced the decision on Wednesday, July 2, after extensive engagement with both political parties the previous day. According to the Commission, only 18 of the 37 initially contested scanned results were successfully verified by the presiding officers, rendering the remaining 19 ineligible for inclusion in the final count.
This means the 19 affected stations must now return to the polls to ensure electoral integrity and clarity in determining the constituency’s parliamentary representative.
Ablekuma North has remained without a sitting Member of Parliament since the 2024 general elections—making it the only constituency in the country yet to finalize its parliamentary outcome. The situation stems from unresolved disputes over the validity of collated results.
The controversy began when the EC initially declared the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn as the winner on December 10, just days after the national vote. That declaration was later withdrawn when it emerged that results from 62 polling stations had not been factored into the overall tally.
Subsequent attempts to restart collation in January 2025 were derailed by conflicting documents, verification issues, and an incident involving violent disruption at the collation center, which raised security concerns. By early January, only seven polling station results remained outstanding, yet further progress stalled amid deepening disagreement between the parties.
During the latest meeting on July 1, both parties reaffirmed their previously stated positions. The NDC argued that the rerun should cover all 37 polling stations, citing concerns over scanned pink sheets they claim were supplied by the NPP. Meanwhile, the NPP maintained that with just three stations pending, the EC should conclude the process and declare a winner.
With no consensus reached, the EC opted to rerun the election only in the 19 stations where presiding officer verification was missing.
The outcome of the rerun is expected to break the long-standing deadlock and determine the final parliamentary representative for Ablekuma North. Both the NDC and NPP continue to claim victory in the December 2024 polls, making this rerun a decisive moment in the constituency’s political future.
