A total of 8,463 Ghanaians across the country have successfully received their newly introduced chip-embedded passports, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This milestone was disclosed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on May 17, citing official data from the Passport Head Office.
“Mahama’s government is here to serve you diligently, and to keep our pledges to you,” Mr. Ablakwa stated, expressing satisfaction over the progress made so far in delivering the new passports to applicants.
The chip-embedded passport, which comes with enhanced security features and conforms to standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is part of the government's effort to modernize and secure Ghana’s travel documentation system.
On May 9, the minister joined officials from Ghana Post for the initial round of deliveries, personally handing over passports to applicants at their stated addresses. During the exercise, he also took time to educate recipients on proper handling of the new documents.
To ensure document integrity and secure delivery, the packages are sealed using tamper-evident materials. Ghana Post, working in collaboration with Biometric Travel Solutions and Troskit, has been operating under a 24-hour model to facilitate nationwide delivery.
For applicants who may face issues with address delivery, the ministry has indicated that passports will be made available for collection at selected Ghana Post branches, free of additional charges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring efficient and timely passport delivery services throughout the country.
