A group of former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has dismissed reports suggesting they endorsed Kennedy Agyapong for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, declaring instead their full support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Former Adenta MCE, Doku Ebenezer, who spoke on behalf of the group at a press conference on Monday, June 23, refuted claims that the former MMDCEs had declared support for the former Assin Central legislator.
“Kennedy Agyapong invited all of us; I was there. But we did not throw our support behind him. His assertion that over 250 MMDCEs came to endorse him is false,” he stated.
He clarified that although Mr Agyapong held an engagement with the group, no formal endorsement was issued during or after the meeting.
“We are reading a statement today on behalf of all of us. No statement was read during the meeting. We spoke, wined and dined, and then we left. Today, we are making this clear with an official statement," Mr Ebenezer explained.
Meanwhile, momentum is clearly shifting toward Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as 220 former MMDCEs—many of whom served under the Akufo-Addo administration—have thrown their weight behind the former Vice President in anticipation of the NPP’s 2026 primaries.
The MMDCEs, after a closed-door engagement with Dr Bawumia in Accra, said their support is grounded in careful analysis of all potential candidates.
“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” the group declared in a joint statement.
They emphasized that their endorsement is not a formality, but a resolute and tactical decision backed by decades of party experience.
“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as constituency and regional executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” they added.
Dr Bawumia’s growing support base also includes 60 Members of Parliament from the NPP, who openly declared their backing for his flagbearer bid during a recent meeting in Accra.
The delegation included high-profile MPs such as former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam, Ofoase Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, Techiman South MP Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, and Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah.
The meeting, which ended in-camera, further solidified Bawumia’s stronghold among key party stakeholders.
Dr. Bawumia will face competition from Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum—all of whom have expressed interest in contesting the 2026 primaries.
The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026, a decision announced by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 17.
“And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries," the party’s statement read.
As the NPP prepares for a crucial internal contest, nomination timelines, campaign guidelines, and a code of conduct for aspirants are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Party leaders have promised a fair and transparent process to ensure democratic integrity.
