MTN Group has launched a probe into a recent cybersecurity breach that may have exposed the personal data of about 5,700 customers in Ghana.
Although the telecom operator confirmed the incident, it stressed that “our platforms remain fully operational,” adding that the company is “closely monitoring our environment” to ensure stability. MTN assured customers that the confidentiality and integrity of its systems are still intact despite the breach.
In a statement dated April 28, MTN revealed: “While at this early stage of the investigation, we have not been able to ascertain the full extent of the incident, early indications are that about 5,700 MTN Ghana customers' data may have been affected.”
The company said it is working with cybersecurity experts to assess the situation and determine the extent of the breach. “We are conducting a forensic investigation to assess any impact to our environment in line with our established security protocols.”
MTN has pledged to notify affected individuals directly. In the meantime, it has issued precautionary advice to all customers, urging them to be extra vigilant. Recommended actions include:
Updating all MTN, MoMo, and banking apps regularly
Using strong, unique passwords and changing them frequently
Being cautious of unsolicited messages and suspicious links
Avoiding the disclosure of PINs, passwords, and OTPs via phone, SMS, or email
Enabling multifactor authentication wherever possible
Requesting fraud alerts through major credit bureaus if necessary
Reiterating its commitment to data privacy, MTN stated: “The privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders.”
Customers who require assistance or further information have been advised to contact MTN's customer support via the toll-free number 100.
