Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra have officially sealed the doors of the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace, as well as the residence at Casa Santa Marta, where the late Pope Francis lived.
Pope Francis’ death was formally announced on Easter Monday, April 21.
The rite of the certification of death and the placement of the Pope’s body in a coffin took place that same evening at 8:00 PM in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta.
During the ceremony, the official declaration of death was read aloud and validated by Cardinal Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.
The solemn ritual lasted just under an hour.
The first General Congregation of Cardinals is scheduled for Tuesday morning, April 22, during which a date for Pope Francis’ funeral may be determined.
